The History of Donelson/Hermitage

Being an important part of Nashville’s original development, the present day Donelson/Hermitage area still has many existing buildings/structures from the 1800’s. Donelson (first being named Slip Up and then McWhirtersville) was a stomping ground for notable residents – President Andrew Jackson and his Family (The Hermitage), The McGavock’s (Two Rivers Mansion) and The Kechem Family (The Beast House / Donelson Manor). Much of the History of early Donelson was documented by Leona Taylor in 1968 before her death. Civil War Soldier visions at the Hermitage, Ghostly Victorian-style servants seen roaming, and Kechem children playing within the windows are all documented sightings within these structures. All of the above buildings still exist today and are available for viewing for both historical and entertainment purposes.
